Online justice news

The new HMCTS divorce online service has moved out of Beta and is now online at www.gov.uk/apply-for-divorce. It offers prompts and guidance to assist people in completing their application. The whole process can be completed online, including payment and uploading supporting evidence.

The service has already contributed to a 95 per cent drop in the number of applications being returned because of mistakes.

Other HMCTS online services recently launched include:

  • the redeveloped small money claims service at gov.uk/make-money-claim, referred to in our lead article on ODR developments;
  • a new service allowing people to submit their tax appeals online, in Beta at gov.uk/tax-tribunal/appeal-to-tribunal, which has drastically cut the number of applications being returned as incomplete or inaccurate;
  • a paperless system for prosecuting fare dodgers more swiftly and effectively, developed with Transport for London and implemented at Lavender Hill Magistrates’ Court.
