{"id":5425,"date":"2020-07-31T10:55:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-31T09:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.infolaw.co.uk\/newsletter\/?p=5425"},"modified":"2021-01-05T11:41:46","modified_gmt":"2021-01-05T11:41:46","slug":"around-and-about-the-web","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.infolaw.co.uk\/newsletter\/2020\/07\/around-and-about-the-web\/","title":{"rendered":"Around and about the web"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Digital Technology and the Resurrection of Trust<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The House of Lords Select Committee on Democracy and Digital Technologies has produced <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3fc31rD\">an important Report<\/a> which focuses on a crisis \u201cwith roots that extend far deeper, and are likely to last far longer than Covid-19.\u201d This virus, that affects us all, is the pandemic of misinformation and disinformation. \u201cIf allowed to flourish these counterfeit truths will result in the collapse of public trust, and without trust democracy as we know it will simply decline into irrelevance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alex Walker of the UCL Constitution Unit provides a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2P7Eqtv\">useful a summary of the main issues and recommendations<\/a> contained in the report. The committee has recommendations, inter alia, on fact-checking, digital imprints, libraries of online political advertising, and promotion of digital literacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Schrems II<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In Case C-311\/18 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/Schrems-2\">Data Protection Commissioner v Facebook Ireland and Maximillian Schrems<\/a><\/em> (aka Schrems II), the CJEU has declared the Privacy Shield invalid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an initial statement, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3hRTibT\">the ICO states<\/a> that \u201cthe CJEU has confirmed how EU standards of data protection must travel with the data when it goes overseas, which means this judgment has wider implications than just the invalidation of the EU-US Privacy Shield. It is a judgment that confirms the importance of safeguards for personal data transferred out of the UK.\u201d They point to the FAQs of the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) on the invalidation of the Privacy Shield and the implications for the Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3k0jTp0\">Hogan Lovells provides a useful background<\/a>er to the case and initial analysis and advice for what companies should do now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Information Rights: A Practitioner&#8217;s Guide<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The fifth edition of the now well-established leading work has just been published. Fully entitled <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3faqJVc\">Information Rights: A Practitioner&#8217;s Guide to Data Protection, Freedom of Information and other Information Rights<\/a><\/em>, it covers the topic comprehensively and methodically in 51 chapters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second volume comprises extensive annotated statutory material, including the DPA 2018, the GDPR, FoIA, subordinate legislation, international conventions and statutory guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hart Publishing, June 2020, 2208 pages, \u00a3200.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Lawyer\u2019s Take on Social Media Misdeeds<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Newsletter contributor Kelsey Farish has a great blog which she dubs \u201ca lawyer\u2019s musings on fashion, media, and digital culture\u201d. Recently she has published a very useful overview (in two parts) of nine<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/Farish2006\"> common offences people commit on social media<\/a>, including copyright or trade mark infringement, defamation and harassment, and privacy and data protection concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Planning, creating and publishing accessible social media campaigns<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you read that heading quickly, you may well have blanked out the \u201caccessible\u201d, but that\u2019s precisely what <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/333el72\">this Guide from the Government Digital Service<\/a> (GDS) is all about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cAccessible social media campaigns can be more effective because they can be accessed and understood by the widest possible audience \u2013 regardless of whether people have a visual, hearing, speech, motor, cognitive or other combination of impairments.<\/p><p>\u201cInaccessible social media campaigns risk alienating our audience, reducing our impact and breaching key legislation &#8230; Accessibility should be built in from the start \u2013 it\u2019s the right thing to do and will help your campaigns reach more of the people you need to.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The guide outlines the key steps content producers can take to create social media campaigns that meet the standards of accessibility required from government communicators.&nbsp;But it is applicable to all concerned to meet similar standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bookmarks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Kira Systems has published a graphic explainer on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/Kira2005\">How AI Accelerates the Legal Contract Drafting Process<\/a><\/strong>. \u201cAI closes the gaps in previous contract drafting software.
